Description

Phenergan Tablets 25mg is an all-rounder allergy tablet that can be used for hayfever and other allergic conditions. It can also be used to treat insomnia and to prevent nausea while travelling as travel sickness.

The active ingredient, Promethazine hydrochloride, works by blocking histamine, the natural substance that your body makes during an allergic reaction. It also works directly on the brain to help you feel more relaxed.

Usage and Instructions

In allergic conditions e.g. hayfever, rashes or hives

Children 2-5 years: The use of Phenergan Elixir is recommended in this age group.

Children 5-10 years: A single night time dose of 1 tablet. The total dose must not exceed 1 tablet per day.

Children over 10 years & adults: A single daily dose of one tablet at night increasing to a maximum of 1 tablet twice daily if necessary.

In travel sickness:

Children 2-5 years: The use of Phenergan Elixir is recommended in this age group.

Children 5-10 years: The use of Phenergan Elixir or Phenergan 10mg tablets is recommended in this age group.

Children over 10 years & adults: One tablet the night before the journey. This may be repeated after 6-8 hours if necessary.

For short-term sedation:

Children 2-5 years: The use of Phenergan Elixir is recommended in this age group.

Children 5-10 years: One tablet as a single night time dose.

Children over 10 years & adults: One or two tablets as a single night time dose.

Warnings

Talk to your doctor before taking this medicine if you are pregnant, might become pregnant, or think you may be pregnant. Phenergan Tablets should not be taken 2 weeks before birth. You should not take Phenergan Tablets if you are breastfeeding as small amounts may pass into your milk, which can be harmful to your baby.

Phenergan 10mg Tablets contains lactose, talk to your doctor before taking this medicine if you are lactose intolerant.

Do not drink alcohol while you are taking Phenergan 10mg Tablets as this is can affect the way the medicine works.

Phenergan 10mg Tablets can cause drowsiness. If this happens, do not drive or use any tools or machines.

Phenergan 10mg Tablets can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, so keep out of direct sunlight while taking this medicine.

Do not take Phenergan 10mg Tablets if:

-The person taking the medicine is under 2 years of age.
-You are allergic (hypersensitive) to promethazine hydrochloride or any of the other ingredients.
-You are taking a medicine for depression called a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI). Also do not take Phenergan Tablets if you have stopped taking one of these MAOI medicines within the last 14 days.
-The person is unconscious (in a coma) or suffers from severe dizziness, drowsiness or headache.

Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking Phenergan 10mg Tablets if:

-You have difficulty breathing, wheezing, tightness in the chest (asthma) or an infection in your lungs (bronchitis).
-You have epilepsy.
-You have any serious heart problems.
-You have liver or kidney problems.
-You have a stomach blockage or difficulty passing water (urine).
-You have increased pressure in the eye (narrow angle glaucoma).
-You have had something called Reye's Syndrome or possible Reye's Syndrome – signs include being sick and confused following a viral illness.

Side Effects

The following are some of the side effects that are known to be associated with promethazine. Just because a side effect is stated here doesn't mean that all people taking Phenergan will experience that or any side effect. Side effects are more likely to be experienced by elderly people and children:

  • Feeling tired or sleepy.
  • Dizziness.
  • Restlessness.
  • Headache.
  • Nightmares.
  • Feeling disorientated.
  • Blurred vision.
  • Dry mouth.
  • Difficulty passing urine (urinary retention).
  • Confusion, particularly in elderly people.
  • Excitability in children.
  • Rash or itching.
  • Increased sensitivity of the skin to sunlight (photosensitivity).
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Awareness of your heartbeat (palpitations).
  • Low blood pressure (hypotension).
  • Abnormal movements of the hands, legs, face, neck and tongue, eg tremor, twitching, rigidity (extrapyramidal effects).
  • Yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes (jaundice).
  • Disturbances in the normal numbers of blood cells in the blood.
