Wegovy Pill and Depression: What Users Report About Their Mood
Some people taking the Wegovy pill say their mood improves as they lose weight and feel more in control of their eating. Others describe feeling flat, irritable, anxious or unusually low. A smaller number have reported serious symptoms, including thoughts of self-harm.
The user experiences described in this article come from individual reports and should not be interpreted as typical results or clinical evidence. Responses to treatment vary, and concerns about mood should be discussed with a qualified healthcare professional.
At present, large safety reviews have not established evidence that Wegovy or other GLP-1 medicines directly cause depression or suicidal thoughts. However, individual mood changes should still be taken seriously, particularly if they are new, severe or getting worse.
The Wegovy pill is a prescription-only GLP-1 pill containing semaglutide. It is designed for weight management alongside changes to diet and physical activity. It is not a treatment for depression, and it should not replace mental health care.

Can the Wegovy pill cause depression?
Direct answer: Current evidence has not established that the Wegovy pill causes depression.
The active ingredient in the Wegovy weight loss pill is semaglutide. It works by copying the effects of a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite, fullness and food intake.
After reports of depression, self-harm and suicidal thoughts in people taking GLP-1 medicines, regulators examined clinical trials, medical records and reports submitted after the medicines reached the market.
The UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency concluded that the available evidence did not support a causal association between GLP-1 medicines and depression, suicidal thoughts, self-injury or suicide. The European Medicines Agency reached a similar conclusion. In April 2026, the US Food and Drug Administration said its comprehensive review had not identified an increased risk of suicidal thoughts or behaviour with GLP-1 medicines.
This does not mean that nobody will experience depression while taking Wegovy. Depression is common and can begin or worsen for many reasons. The difficult question is whether the medicine caused the change, contributed to it or simply happened to be taken at the same time.
What do Wegovy users report about their mood?
Reports from users tend to fall into four broad groups.
1. Improved mood and wellbeing
Some users say they feel:
- More confident
- Less preoccupied with food
- More comfortable moving around
- More hopeful about their health
- Less anxious about weight-related problems
For these people, improved mood may follow weight reduction, better mobility, improved sleep or a greater sense of control.
This does not mean that semaglutide works as an antidepressant. The improvement may be an indirect result of physical or lifestyle changes.
2. No noticeable emotional change
Many people do not notice a meaningful difference in their mood. They may experience appetite reduction and digestive side effects without feeling emotionally different.
3. Feeling flat or less interested in things
Some users describe:
- Reduced excitement around food
- Feeling emotionally flat
- Lower motivation
- Less enjoyment from activities
- A general sense that things feel less rewarding
People sometimes use the term anhedonia for a reduced ability to experience pleasure. However, feeling less interested in food is not automatically the same as clinical anhedonia or depression.
A person may simply find that food takes up less mental space after starting a GLP-1 pill. The change becomes more concerning when reduced enjoyment affects relationships, hobbies, work or everyday life.
4. Low mood, anxiety or irritability
A smaller group of users report sadness, anxiety, agitation, irritability or depressive symptoms. These experiences should not be dismissed simply because studies have not found a population-wide increase in risk.
Patient reports help regulators identify possible safety signals, but they cannot establish cause and effect by themselves. Reports often lack information about previous mental health conditions, other medicines, major life events, sleep, alcohol use and physical illness.
What have clinical studies found?
The most detailed psychiatric analysis of semaglutide for weight management examined data from four major trials of the weekly Wegovy injection.
Researchers found no clinically meaningful difference in depression scores between semaglutide and placebo. Suicidal thoughts or behaviour were reported by 1% or fewer of participants, with no difference between the groups. Psychiatric adverse events were also generally balanced.
A separate study comparing GLP-1 medicines with another class of diabetes medicine found no increased risk of suicide death, self-harm, depression or anxiety-related disorders.
These findings are reassuring, but there are limitations:
- Several weight-management trials excluded people with certain severe or unstable psychiatric conditions.
- Trial participants receive more regular monitoring than patients may receive in everyday practice.
- Serious psychiatric events are uncommon, making small differences difficult to detect.
- Much of the detailed psychiatric evidence comes from injectable semaglutide rather than the newer Wegovy pill.
The tablet and injection contain the same active ingredient, but direct evidence specifically examining mood in users of the licensed Wegovy tablet remains more limited.
What did the Wegovy pill trial show?
The Wegovy pill was studied in the OASIS 4 clinical trial. Participants took oral semaglutide 25 mg once daily or a placebo alongside lifestyle support.
The trial showed substantially greater average weight reduction with the tablet than with placebo. Digestive problems, such as nausea, diarrhoea and vomiting, were the most prominent side effects.
The study was designed mainly to assess weight loss and general safety, rather than to answer detailed questions about depression in people with complex mental health histories.
This means the available evidence does not suggest that the weight reduction pill commonly causes depression, but it also cannot predict every individual emotional response.
Why might someone's mood change while taking Wegovy?
A mood change during treatment does not necessarily mean semaglutide is directly affecting the brain. Several factors may be involved.
Eating much less than usual
The Wegovy pill reduces appetite. Some people unintentionally eat too little, skip meals or fail to consume enough protein and other nutrients.
Low energy intake may contribute to:
- Fatigue
- Poor concentration
- Irritability
- Weakness
- Low motivation
These symptoms can resemble depression, particularly when they continue for several weeks.
Nausea and other side effects
Persistent nausea, vomiting, constipation or abdominal discomfort can affect sleep, work and social activities. Feeling physically unwell every day may understandably lower someone's mood.
Losing food as a source of comfort
For some people, eating is connected to relaxation, celebration, routine or coping with stress. When food becomes less rewarding, they may initially feel that an important source of comfort has disappeared.
That experience may reveal stress, loneliness or depression that was previously being managed through eating.
Rapid lifestyle changes
Weight loss can be positive while still bringing emotional challenges. Changes in appearance, attention from other people, relationships or identity can feel uncomfortable or overwhelming.
Existing depression or anxiety
Someone with a history of depression may experience a recurrence while taking Wegovy that is unrelated, partly related or difficult to separate from the treatment.
Seasonal changes, work pressure, bereavement, relationship difficulties, hormonal changes and other medicines may all affect mood.
Changes to other medicines
Weight reduction and eating less can sometimes alter how a person responds to medicines used for diabetes, blood pressure or other conditions. The Wegovy pill can also slow stomach emptying, which may affect the timing of absorption of some oral medicines.
Do not change an antidepressant or any other prescribed medicine without speaking to the relevant clinician.
Is it safe to take the Wegovy pill with antidepressants?
There is no single rule covering every antidepressant.
Many people may be able to use semaglutide and an antidepressant at the same time, but the combination needs to be assessed individually. Your prescriber should know about every medicine and supplement you take.
Points to discuss include:
- Whether your depression is currently stable
- Any history of self-harm or suicidal thoughts
- Changes in appetite caused by the antidepressant
- Nausea or vomiting that could affect medication use
- Whether the antidepressant contributes to weight gain
- The timing of oral medicines around the Wegovy tablet
The Wegovy pill must be taken on an empty stomach after fasting for at least eight hours, with up to 120 ml of plain water. You must then wait at least 30 minutes before taking other oral medicines. Follow the instructions supplied with your prescription.
Never stop an antidepressant suddenly unless a clinician tells you to. Sudden withdrawal can itself cause anxiety, irritability, sleep problems, dizziness and low mood.
Can you take Wegovy if you have a history of depression?
Having depression does not automatically mean that you cannot take the Wegovy pill.
Your prescriber may consider:
- How severe your depression has been
- Whether your symptoms are currently stable
- Any history of self-harm or suicidal behaviour
- Your current treatment and support
- Whether you have an eating disorder
- How easily your mood can be monitored
- The potential benefits and risks of weight-management treatment
It is important to give an honest mental health history. This information allows your clinician to plan suitable monitoring rather than automatically excluding you from treatment.
You may be advised to track your mood more closely during dose increases or the first few months of treatment.
How can you monitor your mood?
A simple weekly check may make gradual changes easier to notice.
Record:
| Area | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Mood | Persistent sadness, emptiness or hopelessness |
| Enjoyment | Losing interest in hobbies, relationships or normal activities |
| Motivation | Finding routine tasks unusually difficult |
| Sleep | Sleeping much more or less than normal |
| Energy | Fatigue that continues despite rest |
| Anxiety | New panic, agitation or constant worry |
| Behaviour | Withdrawing from people or behaving unusually |
| Safety | Thoughts of self-harm, suicide or not wanting to be alive |
It may help to ask someone you trust whether they have noticed changes in your behaviour.
A mood diary cannot diagnose depression, but it can give your prescriber useful information about when symptoms began and whether they followed a dose increase.
When should you seek urgent help?
Seek urgent medical help immediately if you:
- Have thoughts of suicide or self-harm
- Feel that you may act on those thoughts
- Cannot keep yourself safe
- Experience extreme agitation, confusion or unusual behaviour
- Develop a sudden and severe deterioration in your mental state
Do not wait for a routine Wegovy review. Contact emergency services, an urgent mental health service or someone who can remain with you while help is arranged.
Should you stop taking the Wegovy pill because of low mood?
Do not make a treatment decision based only on online stories.
Contact your prescriber promptly and explain:
- When the mood change started
- Whether it followed starting Wegovy or increasing the dose
- How severe it feels
- Whether you can still carry out normal activities
- Whether you have thoughts of self-harm
- Which other medicines you take
- Whether nausea, vomiting or very low food intake are also present
Your prescriber can help decide whether to continue treatment, adjust the dose, pause it or consider another approach.
Urgent safety concerns take priority over waiting for routine advice.
Wegovy pill and mood: evidence at a glance
| Evidence source | What it found | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| User reports | Mixed experiences, including improved mood, no change and lower mood | Cannot show whether Wegovy caused the symptoms |
| Semaglutide weight-management trials | No meaningful increase in depression or suicidal thoughts compared with placebo | Many participants with severe psychiatric illness were excluded |
| Observational health-record studies | Generally no increased risk of depression, self-harm or suicide | Records may not capture every symptom or relevant personal factor |
| UK MHRA review | No evidence supporting a causal association | Continued monitoring remains necessary |
| European EMA review | Available evidence did not support a causal link with suicidal or self-injurious thoughts | Rare risks can be difficult to rule out completely |
| US FDA review | No increased risk of suicidal thoughts or behaviour identified | Individual mood changes still require clinical attention |
Frequently asked questions
Is depression listed as a common Wegovy pill side effect?
Depression is not identified in current UK information as a proven common side effect of Wegovy tablets. The most prominent side effects are digestive, including nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort.
Can Wegovy make you feel emotionally numb?
Some users describe feeling emotionally flat or less rewarded by food. It is not clear whether this represents a direct medicine effect, a response to reduced appetite or an unrelated mood condition.
Emotional numbness that affects several areas of life should be discussed with a healthcare professional.
Can a GLP-1 pill cause anxiety?
Some anxiety reports have been recorded among GLP-1 users, but current evidence has not established that these medicines directly cause anxiety disorders. Symptoms may also be related to low food intake, dehydration, side effects, sleep disturbance or an existing anxiety condition.
Does a higher dose increase the risk of low mood?
There is not enough evidence to say that higher Wegovy tablet doses directly increase depression risk. However, dose increases may produce stronger digestive symptoms, appetite suppression or fatigue, which can indirectly affect wellbeing.
Report mood changes that begin after an increase.
Can low blood sugar feel like anxiety?
Yes. Low blood sugar may cause sweating, shaking, hunger, a racing heartbeat, irritability, weakness or confusion. The risk is particularly relevant when semaglutide is used with insulin or certain diabetes medicines.
Seek individual advice if you have diabetes or take medicines that can lower blood sugar.
Are online Wegovy stories reliable?
Personal accounts can highlight experiences that deserve further investigation. They cannot determine how common a symptom is or prove that a medicine caused it.
People who experience a problem are also more likely to post about it than people who feel well, which can make rare experiences appear more frequent online.
The bottom line
Reports about the Wegovy pill and depression are mixed. Some users feel healthier and more positive, while others describe low mood, anxiety, irritability or reduced enjoyment.
The best available evidence has not established that semaglutide causes depression or increases suicidal behaviour overall. Major UK, European and US safety reviews have reached reassuring conclusions.
However, statistics cannot decide what is happening to one individual. Any new, persistent or worsening mood change deserves attention.
Speak to your prescriber if your emotional wellbeing changes while taking this weight loss pill. Seek urgent medical help for thoughts of self-harm, suicide or feeling unable to remain safe.
