Can I take Mounjaro if I'm on insulin?
Yes, Mounjaro (tirzepatide) can be used with insulin, but it requires careful medical supervision because the combination can increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia). When tirzepatide is started, your clinician may consider reducing your insulin dose and adjusting it gradually based on your blood glucose readings.
Please note: our weight loss clinic does not support or prescribe Mounjaro for patients who are using insulin. If you are on insulin and wish to discuss GLP-1/GIP treatment options, please speak to your GP or diabetes specialist team.
Key points:
- Both medicines lower blood glucose, so using them together increases the risk of hypoglycaemia
- Your insulin dose may need to be reduced when tirzepatide is added, and blood glucose should be monitored closely
- Treatment should be overseen by the clinician or diabetes team managing your insulin therapy, with regular monitoring and dose adjustments as needed
- The medicines must be injected separately; tirzepatide and insulin should not be mixed in the same syringe and should be injected at different sites
