Can Mounjaro cause low blood sugar even without diabetes?
Yes, it can, but it is uncommon when Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is used on its own in people without diabetes. Tirzepatide increases insulin release and reduces glucagon in a glucose-dependent way, which means the risk of hypoglycaemia is much higher if it is used with other glucose-lowering medicines (particularly insulin or a sulphonylurea). In clinical trials of people without diabetes, hypoglycaemia was reported more often with tirzepatide than with placebo.
Key points:
- In the UK, Mounjaro is licensed for weight management in eligible adults
- Tirzepatide mimics gut hormones to reduce appetite and helps regulate blood glucose
- Low blood sugar is uncommon without diabetes when used alone, but it can still happen
