Will I need to adjust my diabetes medications when starting Wegovy?
Possibly. If you take Wegovy (semaglutide) alongside insulin or a sulfonylurea, the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia) is higher, so your prescriber may need to reduce those medicines and advise closer blood glucose monitoring. If you are only on metformin, dose changes are not usually needed, but your clinician should still review your diabetes treatment and monitor your response.
Please note: our weight loss clinic does not support prescribing Wegovy for people who are using insulin or sulfonylureas for diabetes. If you are on these medicines, please discuss weight-loss treatment options with your GP or diabetes specialist team.
Key points:
- Using Wegovy with insulin or a sulfonylurea increases the risk of hypoglycaemia and may require dose reduction and closer glucose monitoring
- Wegovy with metformin alone does not usually require dose adjustment, but your diabetes medicines should still be reviewed
- Your clinician must review your full diabetes medication regimen before you start Wegovy
- Wegovy must not be mixed with other injectable medicines (such as insulin); inject separately
