Description
What is Skinoren
Skinoren® 20% Cream (azelaic acid) is a topical treatment for mild to moderate acne vulgaris. It works by reducing the formation of comedones (blackheads and whiteheads) and targeting acne-causing bacteria (Propionibacterium acnes), leading to clearer skin and reduced inflammation. Visible improvement usually occurs after around 4 weeks, with best results achieved through consistent use over several months.
Who is Skinoren for
Skinoren® is intended for individuals aged 12 years and above who meet specific criteria:
- Confirmed acne diagnosis For those presenting with mild to moderate acne vulgaris, as defined by NICE guidelines, any number of comedones, up to 34 inflammatory lesions, and up to 2 nodules.
- No complicating skin conditions Not suitable for patients with severe acne or complicating dermatological conditions (e.g. acne conglobata, acne fulminans, rosacea, or perioral dermatitis).
- Preference for private access For those who prefer to access treatment through a pharmacist-led consultation rather than a GP appointment.
Consultation process
Your treatment will be supplied under a Patient Group Direction (PGD), not a traditional prescription. The process includes the following steps:
1. Complete an online health questionnaire
Provide details about your acne symptoms, medical history, and any prior treatments.
2. Pharmacist assessment
A pharmacist authorised under this PGD will review your responses and will contact you by phone or video call to confirm eligibility.
3. Private consultation
All consultations are confidential and allow you to ask questions to ensure Skinoren® is appropriate for you.
4. All-inclusive pricing
The consultation fee is included in the total price. No hidden costs.
5. Identity verification
First-time patients will be asked to verify their identity to ensure safe and appropriate supply.
6. GP or record consent if required
If clarification is needed, consent to contact your GP or review medical records may be requested.
Purchasing this medication does not guarantee supply. Final suitability will be determined during the pharmacist consultation under the PGD. If deemed unsuitable, your order will be refunded.
For patients with uncertain diagnosis, severe acne, or acne leading to scarring or pigmentary changes, referral to a GP or specialist is advised.
