Usage and Instructions
For Adults and the Elderly:
- Cover the mouth of the bottle with a clean fingertip, invert once, and return the bottle to the upright position.
- Apply Anbesol Liquid directly to the affected area with your fingertip.
- Two applications should be enough for pain relief.
- If necessary, repeat the application after 3 hours.
For Babies (5 months and older) and Children:
- Cover the mouth of the bottle with a clean fingertip, invert once, and return the bottle to the upright position.
- Apply Anbesol Liquid directly to the affected area with your fingertip.
- If necessary, repeat after 3 hours, up to 6 times in 24 hours.
- Do not use for more than 7 days per teething episode.
- If symptoms do not improve or worsen, consult a healthcare professional.
If you use more Anbesol Liquid than you should:
- If large amounts are swallowed or applied, seek immediate medical advice or go to Accident & Emergency (A&E) with this leaflet.

Warnings
Do NOT use Anbesol Liquid if:
- You are allergic to lidocaine hydrochloride, chlorocresol, cetylpyridinium chloride, or any similar anaesthetics.
- You have porphyria (a disorder causing stomach pain, constipation, and skin issues).
- Your child is under 5 months old.
- You are using other products containing lidocaine.
Warnings and precautions:
- Do not exceed the recommended dose – excessive absorption may cause serious side effects, including seizures (fits).
- Do not use on open wounds or damaged areas inside the mouth, as this can increase absorption into the bloodstream.
- Seek medical advice if symptoms persist for more than 7 days or occur frequently.
Other medicines and Anbesol Liquid
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken:
- Other local anaesthetics or medicines like lidocaine (e.g., mexiletine for abnormal heartbeats).
- Antibiotics such as erythromycin.
- Antifungals such as itraconazole.
- Heart medications such as amiodarone, beta-blockers, or calcium chloride.
- Painkillers such as codeine phosphate, diamorphine hydrochloride, or paveretum.
- Anti-malarials such as quinine hydrochloride.
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, and fertility
- If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to have a baby, consult your doctor before use.
- Lidocaine passes into breast milk, but in small amounts that are unlikely to harm your baby.
Driving and using machines
- Unlikely to affect your ability to drive or use machinery.
Important ingredient information
- Contains chlorocresol and the azo dyes amaranth (E123) and sunset yellow (E110), which may cause allergic reactions.
- Contains 151 mg of alcohol (ethanol) per 0.25 ml dose (equivalent to 4 ml of beer or 2 ml of wine).
