Do I need to cover Aquacel Extra with another dressing?

Yes. Aquacel Extra is a wound contact layer dressing, meaning it sits directly on the wound and needs a secondary (cover) dressing over the top to hold it in place, such as a foam or film dressing. A healthcare professional can advise which secondary dressing is right for your wound.

Why does the dressing turn into a gel?

This is normal. Aquacel Extra is made using Hydrofiber technology, which reacts with wound fluid (exudate) to form a soft, cohesive gel. This helps absorb fluid, keep the wound bed moist and support the healing process.

What wound types is Aquacel Extra used for?

It can be used to manage a range of wounds, including leg ulcers, pressure ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers, surgical and dehisced wounds, skin tears, partial-thickness burns and cavity wounds, among others. A healthcare professional can confirm whether it is appropriate for a specific wound.

Contact a healthcare professional if you notice a new or increasing wound size, new or spreading redness or swelling around the wound edge, new or increasing pain, a new or stronger smell after cleansing, or more leakage than usual. These can be signs that the wound needs review.

Is Aquacel Extra dressing sterile?

Yes, each dressing is supplied sterile in individual packaging. Do not use a dressing if its individual pack is open or damaged.

Materials: Aquacel Extra dressing is made from Hydrofiber (sodium carboxymethylcellulose), formed into two layers stitched together and strengthened with regenerated cellulose fibre. It is latex-free.

Apply and change Aquacel Extra dressing as follows, following your healthcare professional's guidance:

1. Wash your hands and apply clean gloves.
2. Cleanse the wound with clean water or a wound cleanser, as advised.
3. Dry the surrounding skin.
4. Open the dressing packaging, touching the dressing itself as little as possible.
5. Apply the dressing directly to the wound, overlapping the wound edges by at least 1cm; cut to size if needed.
6. Cover with an appropriate secondary dressing to hold it in place.

The dressing can be left in place for up to 7 days where clinically appropriate, but should be changed sooner if it starts to leak, or if there are signs of bleeding or infection. If a dressing is difficult to remove, soak it with sterile saline or clean water first.

The following precautions apply to Aquacel Extra dressing:

• Do not use on anyone with a known sensitivity or allergic reaction to the dressing or any of its components.
• Do not use if the individual dressing pack is open or damaged.
• Do not leave a dressing in place for more than 7 days.
• Contact a healthcare professional if you notice a new or increasing wound size, new or spreading redness or swelling around the wound edge, new or increasing pain, a new or stronger smell after cleansing, or more wound leakage than usual.
