Ingredients
1 x box of 100 individually wrapped 4mm BD Micro-Fine Ultra needles
Usage and Instructions
- Wash and dry your hands.
- Remove your insulin pen cap. For cloudy insulin, roll it between the palms of your hands 10 times and gently turn the pen over 10 times.
- Select a new BD Micro-Fine Ultra Pen Needle and attach it to the pen, then remove the protective cap.
- Test that the pen is working by selecting 2 units. Hold the pen upright and press the button to release the dose. Watch to see that insulin appears at the needle tip. If it doesn’t, repeat the process until it does.
- Dial the required dose on the pen.
- Select an injection site. The most commonly used sites are the abdomen, outer thighs, upper arms, or buttocks. Check with your healthcare practitioner or pharmacist for the best sites for you. Remember to rotate your injection sites.
- Pinch your skin into a fold and fully insert the needle at 90 degrees to your skin.
- Press the button to release the dose, holding the pen still.
- Count to 10 before removing the needle to ensure the full dose is delivered.
- Remove the pen and take off the needle, safely disposing of it in a sharps bin.
Warnings
Never carry BD Micro-Fine Ultra Pen Needles with the needle already attached. This allows air to enter the cartridge and can slow insulin delivery. If injections are painful when using BD Micro-Fine Ultra needles, try the following:
- Let a doctor decide which pen needle size is best for you; consult them about using a different needle size, pen, or injection site.
- Never reuse BD Micro-Fine Ultra needles, as this can cause bacterial growth, dull the tip, increase pain, and raise the risk of the needle breaking or dislodging in the skin.
- Remove the outer and inner caps carefully to avoid bending the needle.
- Inject insulin at room temperature.
- Use the correct injection technique: insert the needle quickly and relax your muscles.
- Smaller insulin doses tend to hurt less; ask a doctor if doses can be split.
Side Effects
It’s not unusual for BD Micro-Fine Ultra Pen Needles to puncture a tiny blood vessel, so a small amount of blood may appear after an injection. This can be stopped by applying light pressure to the site with a cotton ball, without rubbing, to prevent bruising.
If a bruise appears, do not use BD Micro-Fine Ultra Pen Needles on the same site again until the bruise has healed. If bleeding occurs frequently, consult a healthcare professional about injection technique or possible underlying medical issues.
If leakage occurs after using BD Micro-Fine Ultra Pen Needles, the needle may not have been left under the skin long enough. Try to count slowly to 10 before withdrawing the needle. Some minor leakage after removal can still occur and should not affect blood glucose control.
Make sure the skin-fold technique is used correctly, and release the pinch before removing the BD Micro-Fine Ultra Pen Needle from the skin.
Skin problems at the injection site can occur due to changes in the subcutaneous fat:
- Lipohypertrophy: Appears as soft, grape-like lumps under the skin caused by insulin reactions or needle reuse. Rotate injection sites to help prevent this.
- Lipoatrophy: A rare loss of fat under the skin causing dents, historically linked to impure insulins.
Although it may be less painful, never inject into lumps, as insulin absorption is poor in these areas. Do not miss scheduled insulin injections, as this can affect glucose control and overall health.
