Each effervescent tablet contains 2263 mg calcium lactate gluconate and 1750 mg calcium carbonate, equivalent to 1000 mg of calcium.
Adults and children take one effervescent tablet once daily. Dissolve the tablet in approximately 200 ml of water and drink immediately. It can be taken with or without food.
Calvive 1000 has an orange flavour and is supplied as a pack of 30 effervescent tablets. As this is a pharmacy medicine, a pharmacist may provide advice where appropriate.
Ingredients
Main ingredients: Calcium lactate gluconate 2263 mg, Calcium carbonate 1750 mg, equivalent to 1000 mg of calcium per effervescent tablet. Excipients: Citric acid anhydrous, orange flavouring containing benzyl alcohol, sorbitol (E420), glucose and sulphur dioxide (E220), aspartame (E951), macrogol 6000, sodium hydrogen carbonate.
Usage and Instructions
Calvive 1000 is used for the prevention and treatment of calcium deficiency. It may also be used with other medicines to help prevent and treat osteoporosis, and together with vitamin D3 for the treatment of rickets and osteomalacia.
Adults and children: Take one Calvive 1000 effervescent tablet once daily.
Dissolve the tablet completely in a glass containing approximately 200 ml of water and drink immediately.
Do not swallow or chew the effervescent tablet.
Calvive can be taken with or without food. However, it should not be taken within 2 hours of eating foods high in oxalic or phytic acid, such as spinach, rhubarb and whole cereals.
Treatment may be long term when Calvive is being used for calcium deficiency or alongside other medicines for osteoporosis. Continue for as long as advised by your doctor.
If you forget a dose, do not take a double dose to make up for the forgotten dose.
If you take more Calvive than recommended, contact a doctor or pharmacist immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, thirst and constipation.
Warnings
Do not take Calvive if you are allergic to calcium or any of the other ingredients.
Do not take Calvive if you have high levels of calcium in your blood, excessive calcium in your urine, kidney stones or calcium deposits in the kidneys.
If you have kidney disease, only take Calvive after consulting your doctor, particularly if you are also taking medicines containing aluminium.
Do not take vitamin D products with Calvive without medical advice.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist about other medicines you are taking. Calcium may interact with cardiac glycosides, thiazide diuretics, corticosteroids, tetracycline antibiotics, bisphosphonates and sodium fluoride.
If taking an oral bisphosphonate or sodium fluoride, take Calvive at least 3 hours afterwards.
If taking a tetracycline antibiotic, take Calvive at least 2 hours after or 4 to 6 hours before the antibiotic.
Calvive contains 136.90 mg sodium per tablet, equivalent to 6.9% of the recommended maximum daily intake of sodium for an adult.
Each tablet contains 30 mg aspartame (E951), a source of phenylalanine which may be harmful to people with phenylketonuria.
Calvive also contains sorbitol, glucose, benzyl alcohol and sulphur dioxide. Sulphur dioxide may rarely cause severe allergic reactions and bronchospasm.
Because the medicine contains benzyl alcohol, do not give it to a newborn baby up to 4 weeks old unless recommended by a doctor. Do not use it for more than one week in children under 3 years unless advised by a doctor or pharmacist.
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice. Calvive may be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding in cases of calcium deficiency. Total calcium intake during pregnancy and breastfeeding should not exceed 1500 mg per day.
There is no known effect of Calvive on the ability to drive or operate machinery.
If an overdose is suspected, contact a doctor or pharmacist immediately.
