What is Proctosedyl Ointment
Proctosedyl Ointment is a combined treatment for pain, itching, and inflammation caused by haemorrhoids and related anal conditions. It contains four active ingredients:
- Hydrocortisone – reduces inflammation and swelling.
- Cinchocaine hydrochloride – provides local pain relief.
- Aesculin – helps protect the skin and strengthen capillaries.
- Framycetin sulphate – an antibacterial agent to prevent or treat secondary infection.
Together, these ingredients relieve symptoms linked to haemorrhoids, fissures, proctitis, perianal eczema, and post-operative irritation.
Who is Proctosedyl Ointment for
This medicine is suitable for adults and adolescents needing short-term local relief from haemorrhoids or associated conditions such as fissures or perianal eczema. It is not suitable for anyone who:
- Has untreated viral, bacterial, tuberculous, parasitic, or fungal infections.
- Is allergic to hydrocortisone, cinchocaine, aesculin, framycetin, or any of the ingredients.

Usage and Instructions
- Wash and dry the affected area before application.
- For external use, apply a small amount of ointment directly to the affected area.
- For internal application, attach the cannula and insert gently into the rectum.
- Apply morning and evening, and after each bowel movement.
- Do not use for more than one week without medical supervision.
Warnings
- For topical and rectal use only.
- Do not use if allergic to any ingredient or if infection is untreated.
- Prolonged continuous use may cause skin thinning, striae, or dilated blood vessels.
- Long-term use can lead to adrenal suppression, especially in young children.
- Visual disturbances such as blurred vision may occur; seek medical advice if this happens.
- Avoid in pregnancy or breastfeeding unless a doctor considers it essential.
- Use with caution alongside medicines that inhibit CYP3A (for example, some antivirals).
- Store below 25°C.
- Keep in the original tube with the cap tightly closed.
- Discard four weeks after opening.
- Keep out of reach of children.
Side Effects
- Local itching, pain, rash, or contact dermatitis
- Urticaria (hives)
- Adrenal suppression or, rarely, pheochromocytoma crisis
- Blurred vision or other visual disturbances
If severe irritation or allergic symptoms occur, stop use and seek medical attention.
