What weight-related health conditions qualify someone for Mounjaro?
Mounjaro is currently offered for weight loss on the NHS in the UK mainly to people with a BMI of 40 or above (or 37.5 for certain ethnic backgrounds) who also have at least four weight-related health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol, heart disease, or sleep apnoea. If you do not meet these strict NHS criteria, you may be able to access Mounjaro for weight loss through private clinics, where eligibility requirements may be less restrictive. The NHS is gradually rolling out access, prioritising those with the highest clinical need.
- NHS eligibility usually requires a BMI of 40+ (or 37.5+ for some ethnic backgrounds) and at least four weight-related conditions.
- Qualifying health conditions include: type 2 diabetes, hypertension (high blood pressure), dyslipidaemia (abnormal cholesterol), established cardiovascular disease, and obstructive sleep apnoea.
- Private clinics may offer Mounjaro to people who do not meet NHS criteria, but you will need to pay for the medication yourself.
- NHS access is currently limited and being phased in, so not everyone who qualifies will get it immediately.
