How do painkillers work?
Different types of painkiller tablets work in different ways. The three most common over-the-counter ones you’ll find are paracetamol, ibuprofen and codeine. Paracetamol works by blocking the chemical messengers in our brains that tell us we have pain. It can also reduce fever by affecting the chemical messengers that regulate your body temperature. Ibuprofen works by reducing the hormones that cause pain and swelling and is good for period pain, migraines, back pain, strains and sprains. Lastly, codeine works by stopping pain signals from travelling along the nerves to the brain. It doesn’t work really well on its own, which is why it’s often combined with ibuprofen or paracetamol in a pain relief tablet-like Co-codamol.
What pain relief tablets are good for period pain?
You’ve probably wondered, “what tablets are best for period pain?” Well, it really depends. Everyone who has periods has a different experience, including different levels of pain and cramping - if any at all. If you do suffer from them, you may need to try different painkillers to find which ones work best for you. We stock specific period pain tablets like Feminax Express, which absorbs twice as fast into your bloodstream as regular ibuprofen. You could also try a pain relief patch like BeYou Monthly Patch, which gives you fast-acting relief with cooling menthol oils that lasts for up to 12 hours.
What can I take for pain relief when pregnant?
It’s important to check with your pharmacist, GP or midwife before taking any medication, including painkiller tablets. That being said, paracetamol has been taken safely by many pregnant women with no harmful effects to the baby or mum. If you’re unsure, you can chat with our pharmacist, who can give you expert pain relief advice.
What can I take for joint pain?
