Description
Advantage Flea Treatment for Dogs 10-25kg is a spot-on flea treatment for dogs weighing from 10 kg to less than 25 kg, supplied as 4 pipettes of 2.5 ml (Advantage 250 mg spot-on solution for dogs). It prevents and treats flea infestations and treats biting lice. Fleas are killed within one day.
Key Features
- Fleas killed within one day: The active ingredient, imidacloprid, kills fleas on dogs within one day of treatment.
- 4 weeks of flea protection: One treatment prevents further flea infestation for 4 weeks.
- Also treats biting lice: It is licensed for the treatment of biting lice (Trichodectes canis) as well as fleas.
- Part of a flea allergy dermatitis strategy: It can be used as part of a treatment strategy for flea allergy dermatitis (FAD) where a vet has already diagnosed it.
- Stays effective when wet: It remains effective if your dog gets wet, for example after swimming or heavy rain.
- Pipette sized for 10 kg to under 25 kg: One 2.5 ml pipette contains 250 mg imidacloprid, giving a minimum dose of 10 mg/kg for a dog in this weight range.
Can I bathe my dog or let them swim after treatment?
Advantage stays effective if your dog gets wet. If your dog swims or is bathed often, re-treatment may become necessary, depending on how many fleas are in your dog's surroundings. In these cases, do not treat more than once a week. Treated dogs should not enter surface water for 48 hours after treatment, because imidacloprid is toxic to aquatic organisms.
Will one treatment clear fleas from my home?
Not always. New fleas can keep emerging from the environment for 6 weeks or longer after you start treatment, so more than one treatment may be needed depending on how many fleas are in your home. It is recommended to use a suitable environmental treatment against adult fleas and their developing stages, especially on your dog's basket, bedding and regular resting areas such as carpets and soft furnishings. Treating all the dogs in the household is recommended, because other animals can be a source of re-infection. Flea larvae in your dog's surroundings are also killed when they come into contact with a treated animal.
Can I use Advantage on a pregnant or nursing dog?
Studies in pregnant and nursing bitches and their offspring are limited. The evidence so far suggests that no adverse effects are expected. Treating a nursing bitch controls fleas on both the mother and her puppies.
Can Advantage be used alongside other medicines?
No incompatibility was seen when Advantage was used at twice the recommended dose with fenthion, lufenuron, milbemycin, febantel, pyrantel or praziquantel. It was also shown to be compatible with a wide range of routine treatments in field conditions, including vaccination.
Ingredients
Active ingredient: Each 2.5 ml pipette contains 250 mg imidacloprid.
Other ingredients: Benzyl alcohol (E1519), propylene carbonate and butylhydroxytoluene (E321).
Usage and Instructions
For external use only on dogs weighing from 10 kg to less than 25 kg. Weigh your dog as accurately as possible first, because underdosing can make treatment ineffective and may encourage resistance. Use one 2.5 ml pipette per dog.
- Remove one pipette from the package and hold it upright.
- Twist and pull off the cap, then use the reversed cap to twist and remove the seal from the pipette.
- With your dog standing, part the coat between the shoulder blades until the skin is visible.
- Place the tip of the pipette on the skin and squeeze firmly several times to empty the contents directly onto the skin.
Do not put too much solution on any one spot, as it could run off the side of your dog. Apply only to undamaged skin and do not massage the application site. Correct application reduces the chance of your dog licking the product.
How often to re-treat depends on your local flea situation and your dog's lifestyle, so it should be based on professional advice. If your dog swims or is bathed frequently, you may need to re-treat, but never more than once a week. If your dog has biting lice, a further veterinary examination 30 days after treatment is recommended, as some dogs may need a second treatment.
Warnings
Follow these precautions when using this product:
- Do not use on puppies less than 8 weeks old.
- Do not use if your dog is known to be hypersensitive to imidacloprid or any of the other ingredients.
- For topical use only. Do not give it by mouth, and avoid contact with your dog's eyes and mouth.
- Do not let recently treated animals groom each other, and do not stroke or groom your dog until the application site is dry.
- The product contains benzyl alcohol, which may rarely cause skin sensitisation or short-lived skin reactions such as irritation or tingling. People with a known hypersensitivity to imidacloprid or benzyl alcohol should avoid contact.
- Avoid contact between the product and your skin, eyes or mouth. Wash any skin contamination off with soap and water.
- If the product gets into your eyes, flush them thoroughly with water. If skin or eye irritation continues, or the product is swallowed, seek medical advice immediately and show the package leaflet or label to the doctor.
- Do not eat, drink or smoke while applying the product, and wash your hands thoroughly afterwards.
- The solvent may stain leather, fabrics, plastics and finished surfaces. Let the application site dry before your dog touches these materials.
- Use antiparasitic products only when needed. Unnecessary use, or use that differs from the instructions, may increase resistance and reduce how well the product works.
- Imidacloprid is toxic to aquatic organisms. Do not let treated dogs enter surface water for 48 hours after treatment, and do not let the product enter watercourses.
Side Effects
Suspected side effects in dogs are very rare (fewer than 1 in 10,000 dogs treated, including isolated reports). The following have been reported:
- Agitation.
- Hypersalivation.
- Disorientation and nervous signs such as depression, incoordination or tremor.
- Reactions at the application site, such as hair loss, itching, reddening of the skin or skin lesions.
Hypersalivation may occur if your dog licks the application site straight after treatment, because of the product's bitter taste. This is not a sign of poisoning and goes away within a few minutes without treatment. In rare cases of overdose or licking of treated fur, nervous system signs such as twitching, tremors, lethargy or unsteadiness can occur.
