Freestyle Libre 2 Plus Sensor is a flash glucose monitoring sensor that measures glucose levels in the fluid under the skin of people aged 2 and over with diabetes, including pregnant women. It is worn on the back of the upper arm for up to 15 days, so a new sensor only needs applying after that time.

What do I need to use the Freestyle Libre 2 Plus Sensor?

The sensor must be used with a compatible device: the FreeStyle Libre 2 reader or the FreeStyle LibreLink app. The app works only with certain mobile devices and operating systems, so check compatibility on Abbott's website before downloading it. Glucose alarms are received only on the device used to start the sensor.

Do I still need finger-prick blood glucose tests?

The system is designed to replace blood glucose testing. However, on rare occasions the sensor can give inaccurate readings. If a reading does not seem correct or does not match how you feel, Abbott advises confirming it with a finger-prick blood glucose test and checking that the sensor has not come loose.

Can I wear the sensor for an MRI scan?

No. The sensor must be removed before a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan.

Materials: The manufacturer's instructions for use do not publish a list of materials or composition for this product.

Kit parts: The sensor kit has two parts, a Sensor Pack and a Sensor Applicator. The sensor has a small, flexible tip that is inserted just under the skin, and an adhesive holds it to the skin. The Sensor Pack is sterile unless opened or damaged.

Apply the sensor to the back of your upper arm:

1. Select the site, wash it with plain soap, dry it, then clean it with an alcohol wipe and allow it to air dry.
2. Peel the lid completely off the Sensor Pack and unscrew the cap from the Sensor Applicator. Check that the sensor codes on the pack and the applicator match.
3. Line up the dark marks on the Sensor Applicator and the Sensor Pack. On a hard surface, press down firmly on the applicator until it comes to a stop.
4. Lift the Sensor Applicator out of the Sensor Pack. It now contains a needle, so do not touch inside it or put it back into the pack.
5. Place the Sensor Applicator over the prepared site and push down firmly to apply the sensor. Do not push down until it is over the prepared site.
6. Gently pull the applicator away and make sure the sensor is secure.
7. Discard the used Sensor Pack and Sensor Applicator as described in the Disposal section of the User's Manual.

The sensor needs a 60-minute warm-up after it is applied. To start and use it, follow the labelling supplied with the FreeStyle Libre 2 reader kit, or the User's Manual in the FreeStyle LibreLink app. The sensor can be worn for up to 15 days. It can be immersed in up to 1 metre of water for a maximum of 30 minutes.

Store the sensor kit between 4°C and 25°C. Do not freeze it.

Please note the following:

• Remove the sensor before a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan.
• The sensor contains small parts that may be dangerous if swallowed.
• Do not reuse sensors. The sensor and applicator are single use, and reuse may result in no glucose readings and infection.
• If a reading seems incorrect or does not match how you feel, confirm it with a finger-prick blood glucose test and check that the sensor has not come loose. If the problem continues or the sensor is coming loose, remove it and apply a new one.
• Intense exercise may loosen the sensor through sweat or movement, which can lead to no readings or unreliable readings.
• Check that the sensor codes on the Sensor Pack and Sensor Applicator match. Packs and applicators with the same code must be used together, or readings may be incorrect.
• Do not use the kit if it is damaged or already opened, or if the expiry date has passed.
• For children aged 2 to 12, a carer aged 18 or over must supervise use and help to interpret the sensor glucose readings.
