Description
Hirudoid Cream 50g is a topical medicine containing heparinoid 0.3% w/w, equivalent to 25,000 Units per 100g of cream.
It is used for the treatment of superficial thrombophlebitis and for the soothing relief of superficial bruising and haematoma.
Hirudoid Cream is suitable for adults, elderly people and children over 5 years of age when used as directed. It can be applied to the affected area up to four times daily.
Hirudoid Cream is a Pharmacy (P) medicine. A pharmacist may provide advice about its appropriate use where required.
Ingredients
Main ingredients: Heparinoid 0.3% w/w, equivalent to 25,000 Units per 100g of cream. Excipients: Anhydrous eucerine containing lanolin, emulsifying cetostearyl alcohol type A, glycerol, isopropyl alcohol, methyl parahydroxybenzoate (E218), myristyl alcohol, potassium hydroxide, propyl parahydroxybenzoate (E216), purified water, stearic acid, thymol.
Usage and Instructions
Hirudoid Cream is used for superficial thrombophlebitis and for the soothing relief of superficial bruising and haematoma.
Adults, elderly people and children over 5 years: Apply approximately 5 to 15 cm (2 to 6 inches) of cream to the affected area at each application.
Gently massage the cream into the skin.
The cream may be applied up to four times daily. Do not exceed this dose.
Before first use, pierce the tube seal using the spiked top of the cap.
If the affected area is tender to touch, the cream may be gently massaged into the skin surrounding the affected area instead.
Wash your hands after applying the cream unless your hands are the area being treated.
For external use only. Do not swallow.
If your symptoms do not improve or become worse, speak to a doctor.
Warnings
Do not use Hirudoid Cream if you are allergic to heparinoid or any of the other ingredients.
Do not use Hirudoid Cream:
- On broken skin.
- On large areas of skin.
- On or near sensitive areas such as the mouth, eyes or ano-genital regions.
- In children under 5 years of age.
Hirudoid Cream is for external use only. Do not swallow it and do not exceed the recommended dose.
Speak to a doctor if your symptoms do not improve or become worse.
Fire hazard: Do not smoke or go near naked flames while using this medicine. Clothing, bedding, dressings and other fabrics that have been in contact with the cream can burn more easily. Washing fabrics may reduce product build-up but may not remove it completely.
Hirudoid Cream contains cetostearyl alcohol and lanolin, which may cause local skin reactions such as contact dermatitis.
It also contains methyl parahydroxybenzoate (E218) and propyl parahydroxybenzoate (E216), which may cause allergic reactions that can sometimes be delayed.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding: If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this medicine.
Hirudoid Cream is not expected to affect your ability to drive or use machines.
If you accidentally swallow some of the cream, contact your doctor or a hospital casualty department.
