Description
Imidaflea 400 mg Spot-On Solution is a flea treatment for dogs weighing 25 kg and over, supplied as 3 pipettes of 4.0 ml. It prevents and treats flea infestations and treats biting lice. Fleas are killed within one day of treatment, and it remains effective if your dog gets wet, for example from swimming or heavy rain.
Key Features
- Fleas killed within one day: The active ingredient, imidacloprid, kills fleas on dogs within one day of treatment.
- 4 weeks of flea protection: One treatment prevents further flea infestation for 4 weeks.
- Also treats biting lice: It is licensed for the treatment of biting lice (Trichodectes canis) as well as fleas.
- Effective after getting wet: Swimming or heavy rain does not stop it working, although frequent swimming or bathing may mean re-treatment is needed.
- Covers dogs from 25 kg upwards: One 4.0 ml pipette is the dose for dogs from 25 kg to less than 40 kg, and two pipettes are used for dogs of 40 kg and over, giving a minimum of 10 mg/kg imidacloprid.
How many pipettes does my dog need?
Dogs from 25 kg to less than 40 kg need 1 pipette of 4.0 ml. Dogs of 40 kg and over need 2 pipettes of 4.0 ml, with the contents applied evenly across 3 or 4 spots. Weigh your dog accurately before treating.
Can I bathe my dog or let them swim after treatment?
Imidaflea stays effective if your dog gets wet. If your dog swims or is bathed often, re-treatment may become necessary, depending on how many fleas are in your dog's surroundings. In these cases, do not re-treat more than once a week. Treated dogs should not enter surface water for 48 hours after treatment, because imidacloprid is toxic to aquatic organisms.
Will one treatment clear fleas from my home?
Not always. New fleas can keep emerging from the environment for 6 weeks or longer after you start treatment, so more than one treatment may be needed depending on how many fleas are in your home. Adding a suitable environmental treatment against adult fleas and their developing stages is recommended. Flea larvae in your dog's surroundings are also killed when they come into contact with a treated animal.
Can I use Imidaflea on a pregnant or nursing dog?
Studies in pregnant and nursing bitches and their offspring are limited. The evidence so far suggests that no adverse effects are expected, but you should consult your vet before using it on a pregnant or nursing dog.
Ingredients
Active ingredient: Imidacloprid.
Other ingredients: Butylhydroxytoluene (E321), benzyl alcohol (E1519) and propylene carbonate.
Usage and Instructions
For external use only on dogs weighing 25 kg and over. Weigh your dog accurately first and use 1 pipette of 4.0 ml for a dog from 25 kg to less than 40 kg, or 2 pipettes of 4.0 ml for a dog of 40 kg and over. Apply to undamaged skin.
- Hold the pipette upright and tap the narrow part so the contents stay in the main body of the pipette.
- Snap back the tip.
- With your dog standing, spread the entire contents of the pipette or pipettes evenly over 3 or 4 spots along the backline, from the shoulder to the base of the tail.
- At each spot, part the coat until the skin is visible, place the tip of the pipette on the skin and gently squeeze out a portion of the contents directly onto the skin.
The coat may look clumped or greasy at the application site for a short time. Applying the product correctly reduces the chance of your dog licking it.
New fleas may keep emerging from the environment for 6 weeks or longer, so more than one treatment may be needed. If your dog swims or is bathed frequently, you may need to re-treat, but never more than once a week. If your dog has biting lice, a further veterinary examination 30 days after treatment is recommended, as some dogs may need a second treatment.
Warnings
Follow these precautions when using this product:
- Do not use on puppies less than 8 weeks old.
- Do not use if your dog is known to be hypersensitive to imidacloprid or any of the other ingredients.
- Do not use at the same time as other flea products applied directly onto the animal.
- For topical use only. Do not give it by mouth, and avoid contact with your dog's eyes and mouth.
- Do not let recently treated animals groom each other.
- Do not stroke, groom or play with your dog until the application site is dry. Treat dogs in the early evening rather than during the day, and do not let recently treated dogs sleep with their owners, especially children.
- The product can irritate the mouth, skin and eyes of people. It contains benzyl alcohol, which may rarely cause skin sensitisation or short-lived skin reactions such as irritation or tingling. People with a known allergy to insecticides or alcohol should avoid contact.
- If the product touches your skin, wash the area with soap and water. If it gets into your eyes, rinse them thoroughly with clean water. If skin or eye irritation continues, or the product is swallowed, seek medical advice.
- Do not smoke, drink or eat while applying the product, and wash your hands afterwards.
- Dispose of used pipettes immediately.
- If signs of disease persist or appear in your dog, consult a vet.
- Imidacloprid is toxic to aquatic organisms. Do not let treated dogs enter surface water for 48 hours after treatment, and do not contaminate ponds, waterways or ditches with the product or empty containers.
Side Effects
Suspected side effects in dogs are very rare (fewer than 1 in 10,000 dogs treated, including isolated reports). The following have been reported:
- Agitation.
- Hypersalivation.
- Disorientation and nervous signs such as depression, incoordination or tremor.
- Reactions at the application site, such as hair loss, itching, reddening of the skin or skin lesions.
Hypersalivation may occur if your dog licks the application site straight after treatment, because of the product's bitter taste. This is not a sign of poisoning and goes away within a few minutes without treatment.
