Description
Doxycycline 100 mg capsules contain the antibiotic doxycycline, which belongs to the tetracycline group of medicines. For PGD supply, doxycycline is used for the prevention of malaria in adults travelling to areas where malaria parasites are resistant to chloroquine. Malaria risk varies by destination, season and local resistance patterns.
Doxycycline works by inhibiting the growth of malaria parasites in the blood. It is taken once daily, making it a convenient option for malaria prophylaxis when daily dosing is suitable. Treatment needs to be started shortly before travel, continued throughout the stay in the malaria-risk area, and maintained for a period after leaving the area to ensure protection.
Doxycycline 100 mg capsules are suitable for adults and children over 12 years who require malaria prophylaxis and are able to take tetracycline antibiotics. They should be swallowed whole with fluid and taken regularly at the same time each day.

Excipients: Gelatin, magnesium stearate, shellac glaze, sodium lauryl sulfate, starch, quinoline yellow (E104), erythrosine (E127), patent blue V (E131), titanium dioxide (E171), iron oxide black (E172), propylene glycol.
Usage and Instructions
Doxycycline 100 mg capsules are indicated for the prevention of malaria caused by chloroquine-resistant Plasmodium falciparum.
Adults and children over 12: The recommended dose for malaria prevention is 100 mg once daily.
Dosing should begin 1–2 days before entering a malaria-risk area, continued daily throughout the stay, and for 4 weeks after leaving the area.
The capsule should be swallowed whole with a full glass of water while sitting or standing. It should be taken well before going to bed, and you should remain upright for at least 30 minutes after taking it to reduce the risk of irritation to the gullet. If stomach irritation occurs, the capsule may be taken with food or milk, as this does not significantly affect absorption.
If vomiting occurs shortly after taking a dose, medical advice should be sought, as an additional dose may be required. Doxycycline should be taken regularly at the same time each day to maintain effective protection.
General advice includes avoiding excessive sunlight or ultraviolet exposure while taking doxycycline, as the skin may become more sensitive to sunburn.
Warnings
Do not take doxycycline if you are allergic to doxycycline, other tetracyclines, or any of the ingredients in this medicine. Doxycycline must not be taken during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, as it can affect tooth and bone development in the unborn or breast-fed child.
Doxycycline should not be used in children under 12 years of age due to the risk of permanent tooth discolouration. It should be used with caution in people with liver problems, myasthenia gravis, porphyria, or systemic lupus erythematosus, as symptoms may worsen.
Exposure to strong sunlight or UV light can cause severe sunburn reactions while taking doxycycline. Treatment should be stopped and medical advice sought if severe skin reactions occur.
Doxycycline can interact with other medicines. Antacids, iron, zinc or bismuth preparations can reduce its absorption and should not be taken at the same time. Certain medicines used for epilepsy, blood thinning medicines such as warfarin, oral contraceptives, penicillin antibiotics, ciclosporin, retinoids such as isotretinoin, and alcohol may also interact.
This medicine is not expected to affect the ability to drive or use machines. However, serious reactions such as severe headache with visual disturbances, signs of allergic reaction, or severe skin reactions require urgent medical attention.
