As a lubricating ophthalmic solution, Oxyal contains 0.15% sodium hyaluronate, a natural lubricant found within the eye, and Protector, which enhances the wetting action. The hyaluronic acid in the formula, derived from fermentation and not of animal origin, is optimised and extended by the synergistic action of the film-forming polymer. Essential electrolytes, such as chlorides, sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium, are present to support cellular biochemical processes, while the solution's slight hypotonicity aids in maintaining physiological conditions of the ocular surface.

Oxyal is preserved with the biodegradable Oxyd, ensuring freshness in the bottle. Upon contact with the eye, this gentle preservative breaks down into natural salts and oxygen, making the solution effectively preservative-free in the eye. This characteristic makes Oxyal suitable for those who are sensitive to preservatives and for contact lens users.
