Phenergan Elixir is a treatment that helps to relieve to effects of allergies such as hay fever, pet allergies, dust allergies, and other allergy types. It can also be used as an aid for sleep loss as well as for motion sickness. The active ingredient is promethazine, a first-generation antihistamine.
Using promethazine will make you feel sleepy after about 20 minutes. It can sometimes take up to 12 hours for the effects to wear off. If you're using Phenergan Elixir for the treatment of a cold, nausea, or allergies it should also start to improve your symptoms within 20 minutes.
Phenergan should only be used for short term uses:
- Treating adults with insomnia

Ingredients
Each 5ml contains 5mg of Promethazine Hydrochloride as active ingredient.
Other Ingredients: Hydrogenated Glucose Syrup (Maltitol Liquid), Orange Juice Flavour, Caramel (E150), Sodium Benzoate (E211), Sodium Sulphite Anhydrous (E221), Sodium Metabisulphite (E223), Ascorbic Acid (E300), Citric Acid Anhydrous (E330), Sodium Citrate (E331), Acesulphame Potassium (E950) and Water.

Phenergan Elixir can be used to treat allergies, insomnia and nausea in patients from 2 years old ongoing, so the most effective dosage will differ from patient to patient.

Generally speaking, Phenergan Elixir 5mg/5ml Oral Solution 100ml will mostly be out of your system in two to four days. However, the time it takes to leave your system also depends on a number of factors such as your metabolism, age, health, weight, the amount you take and how often you take it.
For hayfever and allergies:
Children 2-5:
Give 1-3 5ml spoonfuls once a day, or 1-2 5ml spoonfuls twice a day.
Children 5-10:
A single dose of 1-5 spoonfuls, or one or two 5ml spoonfuls twice a day.
Children over 10 and adults:
Two 5ml spoonfuls twice a day. This can be increased to up to four spoonfuls up to three times a day
For travel sickness:
Children 2-5:
Give One 5ml spoonful on the night before the journey. This can be repeated 6-8 hours later if needed.
Children 5-10: T
Two 5ml spoonfuls the night before. Another dose can be taken 6-8 hours later.
Children over 10 and adults:
Up to five 5ml spoonfuls at night before the journey begins. If necessary, take another dose after 6-8 hours.
This Phenergan syrup can also be used as a sedative for a short-term period:
Children 2-5:
Give 3-4 5ml spoonfuls at nighttime.
Children 5-10:
4-5 5ml spoonfuls at nighttime.
Children over 10 and adults:
Use of tablets instead is recommended.
Warnings
Can you take Phenergan Elixir 5mg/5ml Oral Solution 100ml when pregnant?
It’s relatively safe to take Phenergan Elixir 5mg/5ml Oral Solution 100ml when you’re pregnant, but only for very short periods. Talk to your doctor before taking this medicine if you are pregnant, might become pregnant, or think you may be pregnant. Phenergan Elixir 5mg/5ml Oral Solution 100ml shouldn't be taken 2 weeks before birth. You also shouldn't take Phenergan Elixir 5mg/5ml Oral Solution 100ml if you are breastfeeding as small amounts may pass into your milk, which can be harmful to your baby. Speak to our pharmacist or your GP for expert advice before taking this medicine when you’re pregnant.
Are there any other warnings?
Don't use Phenergan Elixir after the bottle has been open for more than a month and always check the expiry date. Also, don't drink alcohol while taking Phenergan Elixir, as it can affect how the medicine works. If you notice a side effect when using, speak to a doctor or our pharmacist as soon as possible.
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking Phenergan Elixir if:
You have difficulty breathing, wheezing, tightness in the chest (asthma) or an infection in your lungs (bronchitis).
You have epilepsy.
You have any serious heart problems.
You have liver or kidney problems.
You have a stomach blockage or difficulty passing water (urine).
You have increased pressure in the eye (narrow angle glaucoma).
You have had something called Reye's Syndrome or possible Reye's Syndrome – signs include being sick and confused following a viral illness.

Are there any other side effects?
The following are some of the side effects that may be associated with promethazine:
- Feeling tired or sleepy.
- Dizziness.
- Feeling restless.
- Headache.
- Nightmares.
- Feeling disorientated.
- Blurred vision.
- Dry mouth.
- Difficulty passing urine.
- Confusion, particularly in elderly people.
- Excitability in children.
- Increased sensitivity of the skin to sunlight (photosensitivity). If you can't avoid strong sunlight, use a sunscreen lotion or make sure your skin is protected with clothing.
