How long should Solvazinc be taken for?

Solvazinc should not be taken for longer than necessary. Your doctor, pharmacist or nurse can advise you on how long you should take it. Treatment should continue until clinical improvement occurs.

Active ingredient

Each tablet contains 45mg elemental zinc (as 125mg zinc sulfate monohydrate).

Other ingredients

Sorbitol (E420), mannitol (E421), sodium hydrogen carbonate, citric acid, saccharin sodium, povidone K25, sodium citrate and sodium carbonate anhydrous.

Always take this medicine exactly as described in the leaflet or as your doctor, pharmacist or nurse has told you.

For oral use.

Dissolve the tablet in a glass of water and swallow the solution after meals.

Adults

One tablet dissolved in water once to three times daily after meals.

Children

More than 30kg: One tablet dissolved in water once to three times daily after meals.

10kg to 30kg: Half a tablet dissolved in water once to three times daily after meals.

Less than 10kg: Half a tablet dissolved in water once daily after a meal.

Do not take Solvazinc for longer than necessary. Your doctor, pharmacist or nurse will advise how long to take it for.

If you take too much

Contact your nearest hospital casualty department or doctor immediately. Take the leaflet and any remaining tablets with you.

If you forget to take a dose

Take it as soon as you remember, then continue with the next dose as instructed.

Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.

If you stop taking Solvazinc

To get the most benefit, always finish the course of treatment recommended by your doctor or pharmacist.

Do not take this medicine:

• If you are allergic to zinc sulfate monohydrate or any of the ingredients
• If you have copper deficiency

Speak to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse before taking this medicine if you suffer from kidney disease.

Other medicines and Solvazinc

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines, especially:

• Copper supplements
• Tetracycline antibiotics such as oxytetracycline or doxycycline
• Quinolone antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, moxifloxacin, norfloxacin or ofloxacin
• Calcium salt preparations
• Iron preparations
• Penicillamine
• Trientine

Food and drink

Take Solvazinc after meals.

Pregnancy and breast-feeding

The safety of Solvazinc during pregnancy is not known.

Only take this medicine during pregnancy or while breast-feeding if your doctor has advised you to do so.

Driving and using machines

Solvazinc is not expected to affect your ability to drive or use machines.

Important information about ingredients

Each tablet contains 115.5mg sorbitol (E420), a source of fructose.

If your doctor has told you that you or your child have an intolerance to some sugars, or if hereditary fructose intolerance has been diagnosed, speak to your doctor before taking this medicine.

Each tablet contains 106mg sodium. This is equivalent to 5.3% of the recommended maximum daily dietary intake of sodium for an adult.

Important safety note

Each tablet container contains a small desiccant capsule within the cap. This must not be swallowed.

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

Reported side effects include:

• Reduced copper levels, potentially leading to copper deficiency
• Changes in walking or co-ordination
• Pins and needles or numbness
• Reduced numbers of red and white blood cells
• Abdominal pain
• Indigestion
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Diarrhoea
• Stomach discomfort
• Irritability
• Headache
• Lethargy
