What are symptoms of UTIs?
You may have a UTI if you experience at least 3 of the following symptoms:
- Burning pain when passing urine (Dysuria)
- Passing urine more often than usual at night (New nocturia)
- Cloudy Urine
- Urinary frequency
- Urinary urgency
- Suprapubic (lower abdomen) discomfort or tenderness
Or at least 1 of the symptoms above and a confirmed positive result with a dipstick test.

Ingredients
The product is in a modified release, hard gelatin capsule containing the equivalent of 100mg of Nitrofurantoin in the form of nitrofurantoin macrocrystals and nitrofurantoin monohydrate.
Each capsule contains talc, corn starch, lactose carbopol, povidone, sugar, magnesium stearate, gelatin and colouring agents (E104, E171, E132).
Printing ink contains: Shellac, Propylene Glycol (E1520), Titanium Dioxide (E171), Black iron oxide (E172), Ammonium Hydroxide (E527) and Simethicone.
Usage and Instructions
Take ONE 100mg prolonged-release capsule twice daily for three days.
The treatment should not last longer than 3 days.
Warnings
Who cannot take nitrofurantoin?
You should not take nitrofurantoin if any of the following apply:
Age and sex
• You are under 18 years old
• You are over 65 years old
• You are a male patient
Pregnancy, breast-feeding, and hereditary conditions
• You are pregnant, breast-feeding, or think you might be pregnant
• You have G6PD deficiency
• You have acute porphyria
• You have rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption
Allergies and sensitivities
• You have a known hypersensitivity to nitrofurantoin, other nitrofurans, or any excipients in the medicine
Kidney, liver, and urinary tract issues
• You have kidney or liver problems
• You have an abnormal urinary tract
• You have renal calculi, vesicoureteric reflux, reflux nephropathy, neurogenic bladder, urinary obstruction, or recent urinary tract instrumentation
• You have an indwelling urinary catheter
Current or past UTI complications
• You previously had a UTI with haematuria (visible or non-visible) that was not investigated by your GP or specialist
• Upper urinary tract infection or other possible diagnoses were not excluded in a past UTI
• You have a history of upper urinary tract infection (including pyelitis or pyelonephritis)
• You have a history of complicated UTIs
• You have severe chronic recurrent UTIs
• You were treated for a UTI within the last 3 months
• You are still experiencing symptoms from a previous UTI
• You require treatment to prevent (rather than treat) UTIs
Symptoms or clinical concerns
• You experience flank or loin pain
• You have a fever above 38°C
• You are immunosuppressed
Medication interactions
• You currently take Dapsone or Prilocaine
Underlying medical conditions
• You have any of the following:
– Anaemia
– Diabetes mellitus
– Electrolyte imbalance
– Debilitating conditions
– Peripheral neuropathy (or are at risk of it)
– Pulmonary disease
– Vitamin B deficiency (especially folate deficiency)
– Neurological disorders
– Allergic diathesis
Please consult your GP if you do not notice any improvement after 3 days of taking the medication.
Side Effects
As for all medications Nitrofurantoin capsules can cause side effects. Some of the most common side effects are:
- Acute, subacute and chronic pulmonary reactions
- Liver toxicity. If you notice any symptoms of hepatitis please stop the medication immediately and call 111.
- Dizziness
- Drowsiness
- Fever over 38 °C
