How do Clarityn allergy tablets work?
Clarityn allergy tablets and Clarityn rapide allergy tablets both contain the active ingredient loratadine, which is a non-sedating antihistamine. Loratadine works by blocking histamine receptors, which prevents the actions of histamine, a substance produced by the body when it reacts to a foreign substance. Histamine triggers a chain reaction that results in allergic symptoms such as itchy eyes, sneezing and a runny nose. By blocking histamine receptors, loratadine stops this chain reaction.
How do I take Clarityn allergy tablets?
You can take Clarityn allergy tablets as needed to relieve occasional allergy symptoms once they've started. Alternatively, you can take them in anticipation of getting allergy symptoms. For example, you can take a dose before leaving the house if you know there will be a high pollen count, or if you're visiting friends with a pet you're allergic to. You can also take them regularly every day to prevent symptoms, such as during the pollen season. The usual dose for adults, adolescents and children aged six years and over who weigh more than 30kg is one tablet once a day. Clarityn allergy tablets should be swallowed with a drink of water, and can be taken either with or without food. Clarityn rapide allergy tablets are designed to dissolve on the tongue without needing a drink, and can also be taken either with or without food.
What should I know before taking Clarityn allergy tablets?
Although loratadine is a non-sedating or non-drowsy antihistamine, occasionally some people may find it makes them slightly sleepy. Make sure you know how this medicine affects you or your child before doing potentially hazardous activities such as driving or riding bikes. If you do find this medicine makes you sleepy, avoid drinking alcohol or using other medicines that cause drowsiness with it, as this could make any sleepiness or reduced alertness worse. If you're due to have any skin prick or patch tests to diagnose allergies, you should stop taking this medicine at least three days before the tests. This is because antihistamines can prevent or reduce the skin reactions that indicate an allergy, and so can make the test results unreliable.
Can Clarityn allergy tablets be used by children?
Yes, Clarityn allergy tablets are suitable for children aged six years and over who weigh more than 30kg. However, you should always read the patient information leaflet before giving any medicine to a child and speak to a doctor or pharmacist if you have any concerns.
Can Clarityn allergy tablets be taken with other medicines?
Clarityn allergy tablets are generally safe to take with other heyfever treatments, such as eye drops or nasal sprays. However, if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal remedies and supplements, you should speak to a doctor or pharmacist before taking Clarityn allergy tablets.
What is hayfever?
Hayfever, also known as allergic rhinitis, is a condition that causes symptoms similar to a cold, such as congestion, sneezing, itchy eyes, sinus pressure, and a runny nose. However, it is not caused by a virus, but rather by an allergic response to an indoor or outdoor substance that the body identifies as harmful. Common allergens that can trigger hayfever include pollen, dust mites, and pet dander. Hayfever can have a significant impact on your quality of life, but there are ways to manage the symptoms by avoiding triggers and finding the right treatment.
What are common symptoms of hayfever?
Hayfever, also known as allergic rhinitis, can cause a range of symptoms. These include a runny or congested nose, watery and itchy eyes, sneezing, coughing, and an itchy nose, roof of the mouth, or throat. Some people may also experience postnasal drip, where mucus runs down the back of their throat, or swollen and bruised-appearing skin under the eyes, known as allergic shiners. Additionally, hayfever can cause extreme fatigue, often due to poor sleep.
