Numark Advance Heartburn & Indigestion Relief Aniseed 250ml is an aniseed-flavoured oral suspension containing sodium alginate 1000mg and potassium hydrogen carbonate 200mg in each 10ml. It treats symptoms caused by stomach contents rising into the food pipe (reflux), such as heartburn, acid regurgitation and indigestion, in adults and children aged 12 years and over. It forms a protective layer on top of the stomach contents that helps stop reflux for up to 4 hours after a dose.

• Forms a protective raft: On contact with stomach acid, the liquid forms a gel raft that floats on the stomach contents and helps stop reflux.
• Protects against acid, bile and pepsin: The raft helps keep stomach acid, bile and pepsin (a digestive enzyme) away from the food pipe.
• Works physically: Its action takes place in the stomach and does not depend on being absorbed into the bloodstream.
• Can be used in pregnancy and breastfeeding: Heartburn during pregnancy is one of its licensed uses, and it has no known effect on breastfed babies.

Can it help with throat symptoms caused by reflux?

Yes. Numark Advance Heartburn & Indigestion Relief is licensed to relieve symptoms caused when reflux reaches the throat, such as hoarseness and other voice problems, sore throat and cough.

Can I use it while taking acid-reducing medicine?

Yes. It can be used to treat reflux symptoms while you are taking acid-suppressing medicine, or after you stop taking it. Leave 2 hours between this suspension and any other medicine.

Is Numark Advance Heartburn & Indigestion Relief high in salt?

Yes. Each 10ml dose contains 106mg of sodium, and the product is considered high in sodium. This matters most if you are on a low-salt diet, for example because of some heart or kidney conditions. Each 10ml also contains 78mg of potassium.

Active ingredients: Each 10ml contains sodium alginate 1000mg and potassium hydrogen carbonate 200mg.

Other ingredients: Calcium carbonate, carbomer, sodium hydroxide, saccharin sodium, ethyl parahydroxybenzoate (E214), propyl parahydroxybenzoate (E216), butyl parahydroxybenzoate, isopropyl alcohol, star anise oil and purified water.

Additional information: An aniseed-flavoured, white or cream-coloured suspension.

Adults and children aged 12 years and over: take 5-10ml after meals and at bedtime.

Children under 12 years: only on medical advice.

Use within 3 months of opening. Do not store above 25°C, and do not refrigerate or freeze.

Please note the following before use:

• Do not take if you are allergic to any of the ingredients, including ethyl parahydroxybenzoate (E214) or propyl parahydroxybenzoate (E216).
• Speak to your doctor if your symptoms have not improved after 7 days.
• It is high in sodium. Ask your doctor or pharmacist before use if you are on a low-salt diet.
• It contains potassium. Ask your doctor or pharmacist before use if you have reduced kidney function or are on a controlled potassium diet.
• It contains calcium carbonate. Ask your doctor or pharmacist before use if you have high blood calcium levels, calcium deposits in the kidneys or recurrent calcium-containing kidney stones.
• Leave 2 hours between taking this medicine and other medicines, especially tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones, iron salts, thyroid hormones, chloroquine, bisphosphonates and estramustine.
• The parahydroxybenzoates (E214, E216) may cause allergic reactions, which may be delayed.

Like all medicines, Numark Advance Heartburn & Indigestion Relief can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

• Uncommon (up to 1 in 100 people): diarrhoea, feeling sick (nausea) and vomiting.
• Very rare (up to 1 in 10,000 people): serious allergic reactions (anaphylaxis), allergic reactions such as hives, and breathing effects such as wheezing caused by narrowing of the airways (bronchospasm).
