How does E45 Itch Relief Cream relieve itching?

Ingredients
Active ingredients: Lauromacrogols 3.0% w/w, Urea 5.0% w/w.
Other ingredients: Dimeticone, Phenyl Dimeticone, Liquid Paraffin, Cetyl Palmitate, Stearic Palmitic Acid, Octyldodecanol, Glycerol, Polysorbate, Carbomer, Trometamol, Benzyl Alcohol, Purified Water.
Usage and Instructions
Before first use, check that the tube seal is intact, then remove it. Apply the cream to the affected skin twice a day. If symptoms persist, consult your doctor.
Warnings
E45 Itch Relief Cream is a medicine. Before use, be aware of the following precautions:
- Do not use if you're allergic to any of the ingredients, including lauromacrogols, urea, benzyl alcohol or cetyl alcohol.
- Do not use on broken, oozing, infected or acutely inflamed skin, as this can cause irritation.
- Keep out of sight and reach of children.
- For use on the skin only; avoid contact with the eyes and mucous membranes.
- Do not apply to the breasts immediately before breastfeeding.
- Using other medicines on the skin at the same time, for example corticosteroids, may increase how much of them is absorbed, as urea can increase skin penetration.
- Discontinue use if irritation or a rash develops.
- Fire hazard: fabric such as clothing, bedding or dressings that has been in contact with this cream burns more easily. Do not smoke or go near naked flames, and be aware that washing fabric may reduce but not completely remove this risk.
Side Effects
E45 Itch Relief Cream is usually well tolerated. Reported side effects include:
- A burning sensation.
- Redness.
- Itching.
- Pus at the application site.
- Allergic dermatitis.
How often these occur is not known. The cream also contains benzyl alcohol, which may cause local skin reactions such as contact dermatitis in some people. Tell your doctor, pharmacist or nurse if you get any side effect, or report it via the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
